Greetings adventurers,

It's been almost a month since our very first exclusive DFO dungeon, 'Once Upon a Time in Arad' has ended.
Some of the most epic illustrations were showcased in this dungeon and we thought it would be nice to share with you the making process as well as comments of its creators!

Since there may be many adventurers who had been wondering about the story behind the development of 'Once Upon a Time in Arad,'
I hope to answer some of those questions by showing a little bit of content. Let's begin the series with notes from NSY, our graphics team member and the designer of Wyatt!

=============================================================================

■ Designer NSY's Note

Hello there, I am NSY, the graphics designer of Wyatt's illustrations. :)
I will share with you in detail how Wyatt was designed from the ground up!

1. Finding/Collecting Reference Materials

The first and foremost step when I start working on something new was to collect reference material!
I mainly collected data through a simple Google Image Search, but my colleagues helped me a lot and shared many relevant pictures and videos with me.
During this step, I looked into the overall atmosphere of the old western era as well as the tiny details in design of clothing, accessories and etc. It was a pleasing experience.

Also, guns have always been an interest of mine. So I used 'data collecting' as an excuse to purchase this sleek model revolver below! :P
It was time to feel the charm of the old western era!

[Here is the BB-gun revolver that I purchased. :D]

2. Sketch

I focused on catching the basic image of the boss and I also drew various impressions and body shapes.
Most of the bosses in a criminal organization have an imposing impression, a charisma over the members, and a relaxed attitude.
I wanted to draw a character that could fully melt in the concept mentioned above.

[I drew it freely during the early proposal stage.]

The muscular male looks strong, but it feels a little empty, the slim and ridiculous impression of males did not match the one of a boss of a criminal organization.
Finally, a middle-aged man with a strong impression and a strong body shape was chosen.

3. Trimming the Selected Draft Design > Detail Work

I decided on the details of the design, including the colors, and started arranging various parts.

Some people clean up the lines in the sketch and put colors,
But I worked on it by creating an overall concept, refining the details, and then adding lines to the work.
The reasons are as follows.

4. Editing/Adding details

As the work progresses and after a certain amount of time, you begin to see the poorer areas that were not clear at first.
The same effect happens when you need to make corrections after receiving instructions to modify certain aspects of the original design.
If you're working on a single layer, it's not easy to fix, so in order to facilitate the correction work, I work separately from the base work stage by site, color, and material.

5. Additional Concept Creation and Completion

If there's some additional things that needs to be added, this is the time I do it.
Because Wyatt must be made into its own dot art rendering, I painted him in different angles. This allows the employees to design from multiple angles.

[I painted the back of the boss for the pixel art design of the boss.]

Also, since the background is not entirely fantasy-based, it was necessary to design it in consideration of the timescale and specific actions we would like him be able to execute.
For example, the design of a shotgun used by the boss is a lever action shotgun.

I was deeply impressed with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator driving a motorcycle while loading the Winchester with one hand.
I thought that this kind of action would suit the boss.

6. Wrap-Up

Working on this piece turned out to be even more fun that I initially thought.
Since it was the first exclusive DFO dungeon… it was a huge burden designing the boss. I felt very pressured to do a good job!
But I felt that it was worthwhile to do so that you adventurers have fun.

I would like to show you the work that will continue to develop.
Thanks for reading. :
