The rain had been falling persistently for several days. With water filling Brim's shoes, each step he took was accompanied by an unpleasant squelching sensation. But what made Brim more uncomfortable was the situation itself.
"Chief... I'm not a maleficent!"
A villager was kneeling in front of the chief, crying out his innocence. However, despite his cries, his hands had already grotesquely transformed. He was a Malefic Human.
"You dare utter such words even after seeing your own hands? What is everyone waiting for? Take this one to Sarra Island.”
The sturdy young men began dragging the transforming villager away at the chief’s firm command.
"Chief! Why won't you believe me? I'm not a maleficent!"
Without a reply, the chief turned away adamantly, his eyebrows twitching lightly.
Maleficents cannot take on a human form, but humans themselves could become Maleficents. When did all the suspicion between the villagers start to arise? When did trust and faith began to twist apart?
Brim took a deep breath, trying to get used to the air filled with a mixture of purple malefic energy. It tasted of iron.
"Don't worry too much."
An Eye of Mu who had been watching approached and grasped Brim's hands. The follower’s hands were as cold as ice, causing Brim to flinch.
"The God of Mist hasn't forsaken us. The relics on Dusky Island, they should make the Watcher's Village safe soon.”
The God of Mist...
What could the God of Mist be doing right now? Surely they were striving to save this realm from peril. Was I utilizing my abilities granted by such a deity properly, though?
As Brim's thoughts reached that point, he politely withdrew his hand from the follower and turned to the chief.
"I will go and search for survivors on Dusky Island today as well."
"You still insist on wasting more time."
"… It's my job to do so.”
Before Brim's first step towards the pier touched the earth, the grand yet mournful toll of the watchtower's bell began to echo through the village.
A boy born and raised in the Watcher's Village.
He has a cautious and gentle demeanor, but he is tougher on the inside than anyone else.
When Maleficents began to seep out from Dusky Island and threatened the villagers, he was the first to step forth and protect them.
Actively working as the so-called “Dusky Island Watchers,” he strived to uncover the dreadful occurrences surrounding the village.
Although dangerous situations arose from time to time, he often used his ability to manipulate mist to protect himself.
The villagers regard Brim's abilities as a blessing bestowed by the God of Mist and encourage him, but Brim himself remains perplexed.
He simply hopes that he is on the right path on how he is using his abilities.
The chief of the Watcher's Village.
Born in the Watcher's Village, he lived his whole life as a fisherman.
Despite being gruff, he gained people's trust over the years with his honest character and proactive attitude towards the villagers’ welfare, serving as the chief for a long time.
However, even as a diligent fisherman and a good chief, he couldn't protect his people and the sea from the Malefic Energy and Beasts flooding out from Dusky Island.
Eventually, to protect the lives of the remaining people, he decided to ruthlessly stamp out the smallest of threats. Even if that included fellow villagers.
