...Nowadays, if you were to ask people which deity is closest to them, they would say, "the God of Mist and Memory."
The mist, rich in mana, is like a gift—an ever-present force that interacts intimately with the people.
But if you go back in time, another deity once stood closer to the people.
The best way to describe her is as follows:
She was the most splendid yet the most humble of deities.
The most familiar yet the most enigmatic.
The most generous yet the most severe.
She was the goddess who embraced all aspects of human nature and called it beauty.
No one hated her, and it is said that she, in turn, trusted all her worshippers.
The people called her the "Goddess of Truth and Beauty."
(Omitted)
But the two deities did not coexist for long.
The exact reason remains unknown but it is recorded that the name of the goddess began to decline.
In the end, it is said that she became an evil deity who cursed those who spoke the truth.
Most surviving records today contain information only of the events after her fall.
No one has left a proper account of the goddess described in this old document by an unknown author.
Perhaps they couldn't, for she cursed those who told the truth.
If that long-lost goddess were to return, how should we receive her?
Or more importantly—how would she receive us?
[Excerpt from Those Who Could Not Tell the Truth,
a travelogue by Nea, a travel writer specializing in ancient ruins]
My precious Narcissus,
don't be so afraid.
Ah, you still resent me.
Of course, you do—it's only natural that your small mind cannot comprehend me.
No one can see the world as it truly is.
You humans always twist the truth to suit your own desires,
and in the end, you throw yourselves into greed without hesitation,
forgetting how it all began.
The elf you loved dared to covet what was mine.
I knew it all along, yet I turned a blind eye...
until the greedy dwarf king himself forced my hand.
In the end, I had no choice but to grant you my blessing.
The knight you called a hero completed every task I set before him to free you from my blessing.
I was deeply impressed by the existence of such a being...
until his own companions, consumed by jealousy, turned against him.
In the end, I could not keep my promise to him.
You may refuse to believe it,
but I have always valued you. I have no intention of harming you now.
I was willing to cherish your lover. I was willing to cherish your hero.
But your greed... It changed my mind.
Your lover was slain by the dwarf king.
Your hero was betrayed and killed by his own companions.
My precious Narcissus,
tell me: by whose hand do you think you will fall?
Venus was too generous—that was the problem!
Beauty should be defined by beauty itself.
Beauty is, without question, something pretty, pristine—something you long to possess.
Look at her Narcissus. Even in its humble form, it embodies everything!
So, don't try to dress up what you merely have as beauty.
Don't cling to something you refuse to discard and call it beautiful!
Something so common, so worthless, is not beauty.
Beauty is rare. Beauty is something not everyone can have!
"What you have is not beauty!"
This is all your fault!
You unworthy fools, chasing after beauty without understanding it, blinded by your own delusions,
and now, Venus's Narcissus is gone!
Poor Venus, don't worry. Your beauty still remains.
Ah, how I long to cut you all apart with these very shears,
just as I cut through fabric!
If I carve away all that is filthy, impure, unworthy—if only the truly beautiful things
remain by her side—then, and only then, Venus will shine forever!
Oh, beauty.
You are both my blessing and my curse.
Though madness veils your true form,
I still see you.
I will not ask
why you have changed so much,
why you have hidden yourself in that blinding light.
I will not complain
even if you grip me instead of caressing me,
even if you scold me instead of offering comfort.
I will not leave you.
Your once-perfect form
remains etched in my eyes.
Even if your silky hair, which once cascaded to your fingertips,
now hangs lifeless, soaked in blood,
I will not doubt you.
Oh, beauty.
You are both my curse and my blessing.
Though madness veils your true form,
I can still see you.
